Intraosseous Infusion

Emergency vascular access in children is often a problem because of small vessels, subcutaneous fat and the development of intense vasoconstriction in pediatric trauma.   Intraosseous access allows easier establishment of a line for fluid administration, and the technique is easily learned - even when used only occasionally.   There are few contraindications and complications.   This is an essential skill, and it falls well within the scope of rural practice.
